Don Juan
A very old Chinese Taoist describes a farmer in a poor country village. He was considered very well-to-do, because he owned a horse which he used for plowing and for transportation. One day his horse ran away. All his neighbours exclaimed how terrible this was, but the farmer simply said, “Maybe”.
A few days later the horse returned and brought two wild horses with it. The neighbours all rejoiced at his good fortune, but the farmer just said, “Maybe”.
The next day the farmers son tried to ride one of the wild horses; the horse threw him and broke his leg. The neighbours all offered their sympathy for his misfortune, but the farmer again said, “Maybe”.
The next week the conscription officers came to the village to take the young men for the army. They rejected the farmers son because of his broken leg. When the neighbours told him how lucky he was, the farmer replied, “Maybe”.
Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so
- William Shakespeare
We can all go through the same experience and events, but what that event means to us is ours to chose. The horse leaving was bad, until it brought back two other horses. That broken leg was seen as disaster, until it kept his son out of the army. We can all assume the worst, and we've all had experiences where in that moment - it seemed like there was no hope. Then later on we find out that if that had not happened, we wouldn't be in the better position that we are today.
That death of a close one can be your self-destruction, or it can be their peace.
That break up can be heartbreaking, or it can be a sign something else is waiting for you.
That rejection can be one of the most embarrassing experiences, or it can be you becoming immune and stronger to it.
Two people can look at a sunset. One will think what is the big deal. Another will see it as a miracle.
Two people can hear an insult. One person can think they are hated. Another will believe that person is jealous of them.
A person can feel that flutter of emotion called love, and believe that means its a sign they could get hurt - so they run, or they can run with it and appreciate it while they have it.
We are all experiencing the same world. It’s in our minds where we chose whether something is good or bad. Many will sway towards the negative.
As much as you can help it, don’t let that happen. Through all the hardships you face, through all the putdowns; the setbacks; the knocks to the ground - you need to keep the faith and be positive that something better is out there. That something is waiting for you.
Never lose that hope, and always search for a positive meaning. It’s amazing how a simple change in what something means can totally change the way you approach something. And that attitude to search for positive meaning will radiate out into everything you do.
It’s you who decides. You are in control
